Gruyere Cheese Sauce

Total Time: 20 mins Preparation Time: 10 mins Cook Time: 10 mins

Ingredients

  • Servings: 6
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup grated gruyere cheese
  • kosher salt, to taste
  • fresh ground pepper, to taste

Recipe

  • 1 melt butter in small saucepan over medium-low heat.
  • 2 add flour; stir 2 minutes (do not brown).
  • 3 gradually whisk in 1 1/2 cups milk.
  • 4 increase heat to high; bring to boil, then reduce heat to medium and simmer until mixture is thickened, stirring constantly, about 4 minutes.
  • 5 remove from heat.
  • 6 add cheese, stir until melted.
  • 7 season with salt and pepper.
  • 8 do ahead: this cheese sauce can be made 2 hours ahead.
  • 9 let stand at room temperature.
  • 10 rewarm before using, adding more milk if sauce is too thick.
